Think Globally Not Nationally

January 1st, 2008 by David William Weisner

For millennia on this Earth human beings have embraced the clan mentality. A xenophobic attitude and a spirit of religious intolerance were the cultural norms in most societies. To be outside of one’s own tribe, ethnicity, or religion was to be a danger to the established order. Though we live in a much more multi-cultural society many people still hang on to archaic ideas of national, religious, ethnic or even gender superiority.

When we look down at a map of the Earth we see the land masses of this beautiful blue planet carved up by artificial lines. The delineations of the nations-states are not apparent from outer space and truly exist only in the consciousness of mankind. All that really exist is one nation of souls on a tiny blue bubble.

All people are brothers and sisters beneath the pale illusions of physical differences. Things like race, religion, gender, and sexual orientation and nationality are not reality and only the soul in costume. Yet these very things are what have motivated millions of people to hate, persecute and kill one another since the dawn of mankind. How foolish and naive a venture this has been.

Every living thing on this Earth is connected to and part of spirit. There are no divisions. There simply is no us and them. It is only us. All human beings on this Earth have incarnated here for the purpose of learning and experience, and we all have a common goal as well as a common destination. We are all born to a woman, breathe the same air, cry and suffer, love, live, and finally age and die. Surely we can find compassion for our fellow man in our common experience.

Nationalism is a cancer of the human condition that has outlasted its usefulness. We need to think globally to solve our problems, not nationally. It is only through a spirit of cooperation and love that we can together solve the problems of our planet. The environment that we have damaged so much knows no national boundary. The same air that is breathed in Cuba and China keeps us alive in the United States. Only through a consorted effort by all the people in the world can we clean it up again. We have polluted our oceans and drinking water through the combined effort of all the people of the world and only together can we change the planet back to a place that nourishes life.

Wars are the result of ignorance. They are akin to somebody stabbing themselves in the leg. We are one people. By thinking globally and not nationally we can realize the foolishness of brother fighting brother. It is only when we give in to the ignorance and darkness that we see other human beings as anything less than our family. Everybody claims they want peace yet there never seems to be any. People will brandish their religions as an excuse for war as if God ever sanctioned a war. Thou shall not kill means do not kill, no exceptions. It does not mean when it is an organized mass murder of one nation to another that it is ok. That is insanity.

When a soldier puts on a uniform and gun he is agreeing to participate in murder. There are no exceptions to this. If no soldier ever agreed to kill then wars would cease. National pride is false pride. All lands are beautiful in their own right and are treasured by the people who live there. If we respect ourselves and our brothers and sisters we will see things from a global perspective instead of a national one.

People don’t come into this world hating one another and under the false pretense that their nation is superior and worth killing or dying for. Those treacherous ideas are socialized into us by the very society whose great fear is losing power over its citizens. Don’t be beholden to the false god of the nation. All nations like everything in the material world will come into existence, flourish for a bit and then disappear into the schema of history. In the long run it does not matter. What does matter are the individual choices we make to treat all people with kindness and respect. What really leaves its mark on this world is not misplaced patriotic ideologies but love and gentleness toward all life. That is what creates harmony and that is what we all should be striving for.

We can all live together in peace because we are all in this together. Don’t be fooled by a flag or an accent. All is spirit and we are all the sons and daughters of God. By thinking globally and not nationally we exalt ourselves and each other and start to begin the healing of the planet. Look at every child as your own and you can only feel the love that is in all of us. We are truly one.
